課程目標

It can be daunting for students who have just graduated from CMI-based high schools to face the prospect of entering an English only college program. A preparatory course placed right before start of the first semester can ease this transition.

This course aims:
To encourage student learning through fun, hands-on activities.

To teach effective techniques for improving alertness and comprehension when listening to lectures in English.

To encourage effective study habits, including the use of AI and other internet resources to help with understanding textbooks and assignments.

To encourage interaction between the incoming students, and the forming of study groups.

To provide a review overview of topics relevant to incoming computer science students, but with English terminology.

課程內容


Session 1 (Sept 6, 10:00-12:00):
Preparing for EMI Lectures: study habits and alertness tips
Practice with Numeric Bases
(includes hands-on activities)

Session 2 (Sept 6, 13:00-16:00):
Using AI to Help with EMI-based Study:
- LLM (ChatGPT) Technical Overview
- Effective Use of AI for Understanding EMI Lectures, Textbooks, and HW Assignments.
(includes group discussion and activities with hands-on interaction with ChatGPT)

Session 3 (Sept 13, 9:30-12:30):
How computers work:
- How Data Is Represented in Binary
(includes hands-on activity with coded messages)
- How Logic Circuits Work
(includes hands-on water-based interaction)
- How Logic Circuits Achieve Computation

Session 4 (Sept 13, 13:30-15:30):
How Computer Programs Work:
- How Memory and Program Variables Work
- Running Programs
(includes hands-on running of some provided programs)

限修條件

In-coming freshman in an All-English EMI program (computer science preferred).
Ability to program is not required.
