課程目標

Students will be able to:

1. Identify the key elements of a documentary (e.g., basic film details, genre, plot, characterization, point of view, use of cinematic effects).
2. Analyze the influence of documentary elements on viewers’ interpretation of a documentary.
3. Articulate a clearer understanding of, and commitment to, one’s personal values and response related to social issues.
4. Develop classroom interactional competence and communicative competence in English through class discussions.
5. Develop conciseness in English academic writing through reflection papers.

課程內容

This microcredit course is designed to be an opportunity for students to develop their knowledge of social issues, critical thinking, and academic English abilities through the viewing, discussion, and analysis of documentaries. This is not a class on film theory, but rather utilizes documentary film as a medium for examining social issues through group discussions and reflective essays.

The following topics will be covered in the 10-hr course:
1. English speaking enhancement: Communicative Competence (Hymes 1966), Classroom Interactional Competence (Walsh 2011), and functional competence in classroom interactions, group discussions, and general conversations.
2. Writing enhancement: summary writing, strategies for conciseness
